About The Dance Project
The Dance Project (TDP) is a dance and gymnastics academy that director Melissa Walsh founded after moving to Dubai in 2013. It runs its classes inside Dubai schools, and this listing is its Kings' School Al Barsha venue, where the 2026/27 timetable has ballet, lyrical and acro dance. Your child does not need to be a Kings' pupil to join. TDP describes itself as specialists in acro dance, a mix of dance and acrobatic floor work, and calls itself the home of the Mini World Champion acro dancer. Classes are grouped by level: Level 1 and Level 2 ballet with Ms Olga, an open lyrical class with Miss Kennedie, and Level 1-4 acro dance on weekday afternoons. Children can train just for fun or aim for performances and competitions. TDP also runs acro Mini, Junior and Elite competition teams; ask which venue they train at. Fees are paid by the term, and full timetables and prices are published as PDFs on the TDP website.
The activity
Dance, explained
Children's dance classes teach kids to move to music with control and confidence. Ballet builds posture, balance and a clear vocabulary of steps, usually at the barre first and then in the centre of the room. Lyrical and contemporary are freer, more expressive styles. Acro dance mixes dance technique with acrobatic floor skills such as bridges, walkovers and balances, so it builds strength and flexibility as well as rhythm. Most schools take children from about three for playful pre-ballet, with more structured technique classes from around five. Along the way children learn to follow instructions, remember sequences and perform in front of others.
Who it's for
Children, from recreational beginners to competition dancers. At Kings' Al Barsha the Term 1 2026/27 timetable lists Ballet Level 1, 1+ and 2, an open Lyrical class and Acro Dance Level 1-4. Ages for these levels are not published, so ask TDP which level suits your child's age and experience. TDP's class page also describes Pre Ballet (ages 3-4) and a Beginners Academy (ages 5+), but neither appears on the current Kings' timetable. Children do not need to attend the school to join. Parents are asked to share any medical, developmental or additional support needs before the first class.
What to expect
Classes are weekly, booked by the term. At Kings' Al Barsha, Level 1 ballet lasts an hour, while Level 2 ballet, lyrical and acro sessions last 90 minutes. The TDP uniform is compulsory and must be pre-ordered before class (allow up to 14 days). Leggings may be worn for religious reasons. Hair must be slicked back in a secure bun or ponytail, or your child may not be allowed to take part. Trial classes must be booked and paid for in advance where they are offered, and a trial does not hold a place. The trial fee is not published, so ask TDP. To speak to a coach, catch them in the first or last five minutes of class.
