About On The Wave (Business Bay)
On The Wave is a wakesurf club that runs two Centurion RI230 boats, called Sky and Smoke, from D-Marin Business Bay Marina on Al Abraj Street. You book the boat in 25-minute slots for wakesurfing, wakeboarding, hydrofoil or longboard riding, and boards and life jackets are included in the price. The club chose the Creek, it says, for calm water away from yachts and jet skis, with the Burj Khalifa in view at sunrise and sunset. Its coaches are competing wakesurf riders; the team page lists medals at the UAE Championship in 2023 and 2025. The club is built around adult riders and athletes rather than a kids' programme, but children are welcome with rules: under-18s must ride lessons with an instructor or under a responsible adult's supervision, and children must never be left alone on the boat or at the club. Its board range includes a small, light board made for children's first steps. The booking form has an "I will be with kids" option.
The activity
Wakeboarding, explained
Wakeboarding and wakesurfing both happen behind a wake boat built to throw a clean wave. In wakeboarding, the rider stands sideways on a short board with feet in bindings and holds a rope handle while the boat tows them along. In wakesurfing, the rider is pulled up on a short rope, then lets go and surfs the boat's wave without any bindings, much like surfing in the sea but at low speed. Beginners first learn to get up from the water and find their balance. Both build leg and core strength, balance and confidence in open water, and a life jacket is worn the whole time. There is no published starting age here, so ask the club about your child.
Who it's for
Beginners through to competing riders who want to wakesurf, wakeboard, hydrofoil or longboard behind a boat. The club publishes no minimum age and no children's programme. Its rules say wakesurfing lessons for riders under 18 must be with an instructor, or else under the supervision of a responsible adult who takes on all risks, and that children must not be left unsupervised on the boat or at the club. It keeps a small kids' board (Candy Kids) for first rides. Ask the provider whether your child is old enough before booking.
What to expect
Book a slot and a service online (you can pick an instructor and tick "I will be with kids"), then arrive about 20 minutes early to pick up a board and wetsuit, change and walk to the boat. Bring swimwear and clothes for the weather; the boats carry towels, water and phone chargers. A life jacket is compulsory for every rider and included in the price, as is the board; wetsuits in all sizes for men and women are available to rent. For a first ride the club strongly advises an instructor, or at least instructions from the boat pilot. There is no free trial; ask the provider about a first session for a child.
