About Juju Wakeclub
Juju Wakeclub is a boat-based wakesurfing and wakeboarding club founded in September 2022 by Julia Shevchenko, known as Juju, who the club describes as a world champion and its head coach. It rides from two spots: Dubai Canal in Business Bay, with city views and flat water, and JA Marina in Jebel Ali, a calmer marina away from the city. Alongside adult sessions it runs a Kids School, where children ride a board behind the boat and learn balance, control and confidence. The kids' page says children can start from 6 years old with a parent or guardian present, each child is assessed individually, and a coach is always on the boat. All gear is provided and fitted, and a child does not need to be able to swim, though being comfortable in water helps. Sessions are booked online or through WhatsApp, so ask which spot and time suit a young beginner.
The activity
Surfing, explained
Wakesurfing is surfing without an ocean: a specially designed boat creates a wave, and the rider surfs it a few metres behind the boat, hands-free, with no rope once they are up. Beginners start with a short briefing on land, then learn the water start holding a rope before letting go to ride the wave. Wakeboarding is its faster cousin, where the rider stays on the rope and is pulled by the boat. Both build balance, core strength and confidence in open water, and life vests are standard. Starting ages are set by each operator, so check the club's own kids' page.
Who it's for
Children from 6 years old with a parent or guardian present, per the club's Kids School page; each child is assessed individually. Complete beginners are welcome and swimming is not required (a life vest is always worn). The club's adult sessions cover first-timers through to competition riders.
What to expect
The Kids School page lays out a first session as gear fitting, an on-land briefing, water start coaching and then a guided ride with a coach on the boat. Board, life vest and all equipment are included for kids of all sizes; bring swimwear, sunscreen and water. Sessions only run in safe weather, and kids never ride without a coach on the boat. For first-timers the club lists a 30-minute Taster session at 390 AED plus 5% VAT, exclusive of coaching fees; it is a general session, not a Kids School price, so ask the provider what a child's first session costs and which spot it uses. Pick a branch on this page for its address and rating.
