PBI Tennis (Peter Burwash International Middle East) runs the tennis programme at Park Hyatt Dubai on Dubai Creek. The club has three flood-lit courts and a junior programme for ages 4 to 17. Younger players usually start in the Junior Development Program. It introduces ages 4-11 to tennis in small groups, with no more than 4 players per coach, and uses the 10-and-under model, so each child plays with the right ball, court and racquet for their age and level. Children who catch the competition bug can move up to the Junior Academy Program. Sessions there are longer, more frequent and more intense, with a minimum of 3 hours a week. The venue also offers private and semi-private lessons for children and adults, children's tennis carnivals, and weekly match plays run through UTR (Universal Tennis Rating). PBI publishes its prices on its website: the 2024-25 junior group rate is AED 2,400 for a 15-week term at once a week. It's rated 4.6 on Google from 11 reviews.

The activity

Tennis, explained

Junior tennis teaches children to rally, serve and move around the court, and later to score and play matches. Young beginners usually start on smaller courts with softer, slower balls and shorter racquets, so they can keep a rally going early and enjoy it. As they grow, they move up to bigger courts and faster balls, then on to match play and tournaments if they want to compete. Along the way tennis builds hand-eye coordination, footwork, balance and fitness, plus focus and the resilience to bounce back after a lost point. Many children start in small groups at around four or five years old.

Who it's for

Children aged 4 to 17. The Junior Development Program introduces ages 4-11 to tennis in small groups. The Junior Academy Program is for players who want to compete, with a minimum of 3 hours a week. Private lessons are open to all ages and levels. The PBI Scholarship Program is by selection only, for players aged 8 and up who train 5 days a week.

What to expect

In the Junior Development Program, groups have no more than 4 players per coach. Children play with the ball, court and equipment that suit their age and level, following the 10-and-under tennis model, and they get to try match play once they're ready. PBI asks for at least 1 hour a week and suggests 2 hours or more. Rental racquets and balls are included in all charges, so a beginner doesn't need their own kit on day one. The website doesn't mention a trial session or say what to wear, so ask the provider through the enquiry form or by email before the first class.
