About Ocean Tribe
Ocean Tribe is a kitesurfing and wingfoiling school that teaches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with Dubai lessons from Hessyan and Jumeirah and an Abu Dhabi team on Yas Island. The school says it was the first to open in the UAE, back in 2001, and that it has taught more than 3,000 students. It teaches adults and runs a kids' kitesurfing programme for children from 8 years old. Its 2025 blogs name Jebel Ali Beach and Nessnass Beach in Jumeirah 3 as places it teaches in Dubai; confirm the meeting point when you book. In Dubai, children can start with a two-hour discovery lesson that covers the wind, the equipment, safety and how to fly the kite on land. Families who want more can book a six-hour package that moves on to body-dragging, the waterstart and first rides. Lessons are booked around the wind, so the instructor tells you when conditions are right, and you do not pay if conditions are not good. Your child needs to be able to swim.
The activity
Kitesurfing & Windsurfing, explained
Kitesurfing means riding a small board across the water while holding a large kite that catches the wind. Children do not start on the water: first lessons happen on the sand and in the shallows, learning how the wind works, how to set up and check the kite, and how to steer it with two hands, then one. Next comes body-dragging, where the kite pulls them through the water without a board, before they try standing up. It builds balance, core strength, confidence in the sea and a real feel for wind and weather. Children need to be able to swim, and schools usually take them from around eight, once they can handle the pull of a kite.
Who it's for
Children from 8 years old. No previous experience is needed for the discovery lesson; the 6-hour kids package suits children with some watersport or boardsport experience who want a faster route onto the board. Children need to be able to swim. The school also teaches adults, from complete beginners to advanced riders.
What to expect
The first step for most children is the two-hour discovery lesson, described by the school as a no-strings first lesson with no previous experience needed. It focuses on the basics on land: the wind, the equipment, safety and how to fly the kite. Lessons usually run for two hours and depend on the weather, so your instructor keeps in touch and books you in when conditions suit. For what to bring, the school's blog suggests waterproof sunscreen, a rash guard or wetsuit, water and snacks. Ask the provider what kit is included.
