About Kitesurf School Dubai - KSD
Kitesurf School Dubai, known as KSD, has taught kitesurfing on Kite Beach in Jumeirah since 2009, from a kite centre and shop set right on the sand. Its courses start on land with a trainer kite, wind theory and safety systems, then move into the water for self-rescue, body dragging and first rides on the board. Lessons are private, or semi-private with two or three students sharing one instructor, and the kit is included. The school says most beginners take 6 to 10 hours before their first rides. The same centre teaches wingfoiling and windsurfing and rents out stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. For younger children it runs beach birthday parties with surfing basics, paddleboarding and kayaking, and it has run Surf Zone holiday camps for ages 4 to 12. The kitesurf pages give no minimum age, so for a child the first thing to ask is how old and how heavy they need to be.
The activity
Kitesurfing & Windsurfing, explained
Kitesurfing means riding a small board across the water while holding a large kite that the wind pulls along. Beginners never start in the sea: they first fly a small trainer kite on the sand, learn how the wind works and practise the safety releases, then move into the water to be dragged along without a board before standing up. It builds balance, core strength, coordination and a real feel for wind and weather. Because the pull of the kite depends on the rider's weight and strength, schools set their own minimum age and size, so it is usually older children and teenagers who start. Strong swimming is a must.
Who it's for
Kitesurf, wingfoil and windsurf lessons are for complete beginners and improving riders; the only fitness requirement the school lists is being able to swim in the sea. No minimum age for kitesurf lessons is published, so ask the provider before booking for a child. Kids' birthday parties (2 or 3 hours) include surfing basics, paddleboarding and kayaking, with life vests worn at all times and at least one responsible adult present; no age range is given. The Surf Zone kids holiday camp in October 2025 was for children aged 4 to 12. Equipment rental is only for experienced riders who can prove their level.
What to expect
A first kitesurf course starts on land: a trainer kite, wind theory, safety systems, setting up the kite and pre-flight checks, then launching, flying and landing it. Water lessons follow, with self-rescue, body surfing, body dragging and then board riding. The kite, board and harness are provided; bring swimming clothes, water, sunglasses, a T-shirt and sun cream. Cancellations or rescheduling need at least 24 hours' notice, or the session is deducted or charged, and weather-cancelled sessions are rescheduled or credited rather than refunded. No free trial is mentioned; ask the provider.
