About Kite Zone Dubai

Kite Zone Dubai is a kitesurfing and wingfoil school on The Kite Beach in Umm Suqeim 1 - you'll find it at the yellow bus. It was set up by Lewis Deaves, a former competitive kitesurfer who has taught and managed kite schools in the UK, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Australia, Cape Town and beyond. Children can join from 8 years old, as long as they weigh at least 35kg, so in practice this suits older, sturdier kids and teens as much as adults. Lessons are private or in small groups of up to four, all kit is included in the price and a helmet is worn for every lesson in the water. The school sets out a clear five-lesson path from flying a trainer kite on the sand to standing up and riding. It also runs stand-up paddleboarding for families, kids' parties and school events, and sells gift vouchers and kit through its own shop. Kite Zone Dubai is rated 4.8 on Google from 48 reviews.

The activity

Kitesurfing & Windsurfing, explained

Kitesurfing uses a large steerable kite to pull a rider across the water on a small board. Wingfoiling uses a smaller handheld inflatable wing to power a rider standing on a hydrofoil board that lifts above the surface. Beginners start on the beach with a small trainer kite, learning where the power comes from and how to release it safely, before moving into shallow water to be dragged by the kite and, later, standing up on the board. Because the pull of the kite is strong, schools usually set a minimum age and body weight. It builds core strength, balance and confidence around wind and water, and is usually taught in private or small-group lessons.

Who it's for

Kitesurf lessons are for ages 8 and up, with a minimum weight of 35kg. Complete beginners are welcome - the school suggests a longer package for anyone with no kite or board-sport experience, and hourly lessons for riders who already kite and want to learn jumps or turns. Stand-up paddleboarding is pitched at any age and fitness level, including families, kids' parties and school events.

What to expect

Each lesson usually lasts about two hours. The first one stays mostly on the beach: wind direction, flying a small trainer kite in a figure of eight, the safety release and self-rescue. Later lessons move into the water - body-dragging with a bigger kite, relaunching it, then the water start. By around the fifth lesson the aim is to stand up and ride in one direction. All equipment is included and a helmet is required in the water. Ask the provider about a single taster lesson for a child.
