The activity

Jiu-Jitsu, explained

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art built around controlling a partner on the ground with position, leverage and holds rather than punches or kicks. In kids' classes, children learn to fall safely, escape, hold positions and solve problems on the mat, usually through games and drills that build up step by step. Most children train in a gi, the jiu-jitsu uniform, and move through a belt system as their skills grow. It suits kids who enjoy structure and hands-on challenges, and parents often choose it for confidence, focus and self-defence. Starting ages vary by academy, so check each programme's age band.

Who it's for

Kids aged 3-15 in the Junior Jesters programme, plus a separate Teens Class (the site does not give that class's age band). Levels, and whether classes are split by boys and girls, are not published: ask the provider.

What to expect

You can start with a free class: the website has a 'try a free class' button. Junior Jesters sessions on the published timetable run for 45 minutes: Tuesday and Thursday 4:30-5:15pm, Friday 1:00-1:45pm and Saturday 9:30-10:15am. The club says the programme builds resilience, problem-solving and friendships through play. The site doesn't publish membership prices or say what kit a beginner needs. Ask the provider, or check the Jesters Therapy app where memberships are booked. The club's map puts parking in Al Quoz Industrial Area 3, a short walk from the warehouse entrance.
