The activity

Jiu-Jitsu, explained

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art built on leverage and technique rather than strikes, so a smaller person can learn to control a bigger one through position rather than strength. Children's classes usually mix movement games and simple drills with structured technique and, as kids get older, controlled sparring (known as rolling). Along the way children build coordination, confidence, discipline and practical self-defence skills, and a coloured-belt system lets them see their progress. Starting ages vary by academy: some take children from three, with older kids moving into a separate junior class.

Who it's for

Children aged 3-6 (Kids 3-6 class) and 7-11 (Juniors 7-11 class). Kids 3-6 is designed to introduce young children to the basics; Juniors 7-11 also offers preparation for children interested in competing. The academy runs adult classes too.

What to expect

Kids 3-6 is built around playful drills, movement games and simple techniques, aiming to develop coordination, confidence, discipline and respect. Juniors 7-11 is more structured: technique, drills and controlled sparring, with a clear belt progression and optional competition preparation. The website timetable lists Kids 3-6 on Tuesday at 15:30, Friday at 14:30 and Saturday at 09:00, and Juniors 7-11 on Tuesday at 16:30, Friday at 15:30 and Saturday at 10:00. Bookings and belt progress are handled in the MAAT app. Prices, class length, trial classes and kit are not on the website, so ask the academy on WhatsApp before your first visit.
