Most children can start from 3 years old. The academy assesses each child and places them in the right class by age, attention span and comfort level.

Do we need to buy a gi before the first class?

No. For the trial class the academy can provide a gi, so your child can try it before you buy anything.

Is it safe for young children?

The academy says classes are fully supervised by trained instructors, techniques are taught progressively, and activities are adapted for each age group.

What does the kids programme focus on?

Jiu-jitsu fundamentals plus focus, self-control and teamwork, with anti-bullying and self-defence skills, discipline, social skills and motor coordination built through playful drills and movement games.

GFTeam Dubai is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy at Schon Business Park, Retail 13, in Dubai Investment Park 1, and part of GFTeam, a team the academy says was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1996. Its Youth BJJ programme teaches jiu-jitsu fundamentals while building focus, self-control and teamwork, with an emphasis on discipline, confidence and motor development in a safe, welcoming setting. Most children can start from 3 years old: the team assesses each child and places them in a class by age, attention span and comfort level, and classes are organised by age group and skill level. Instructors supervise every class, teach techniques progressively and adapt activities for each age group. The kids page also highlights anti-bullying and self-defence skills, and making friends away from screens. For grown-ups there are adults, ladies-only, no-gi, fitness and private classes. The first step is a free trial class, and the academy can lend a gi for it. GFTeam Dubai rates 5.0 on Google from 24 reviews.

The activity

Jiu-Jitsu, explained

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art built around controlling a partner on the ground through positioning, leverage and holds rather than punches or kicks. For children, classes mix technique with playful drills and movement games, and the focus is on discipline, self-control, coordination and confidence. Kids usually train in a gi, the traditional jiu-jitsu uniform, and move up through a belt system as their skills grow. Because it is about control rather than striking, it suits children who enjoy structure, problem-solving and working closely with a partner. Many children begin in the early primary years, and some clubs start them younger.

Who it's for

Children from around 3 years old: the academy says most children can start at 3, and it assesses each child and places them by age, attention span and comfort level, with classes organised by age group and skill level. No upper age for the kids programme and no boys/girls split is published - ask the provider. The academy also runs adults, ladies-only, no-gi, fitness and private classes.

What to expect

Start with a free trial class, booked on WhatsApp (+971 55 985 8947) or through the registration form on the website; after you register, the team gets in touch to find the best schedule for your child. Before placing them in a class, the academy assesses each child's age, attention span and comfort level. For the trial, the academy can provide a gi, so there is nothing to buy before you know your child enjoys it. Classes are supervised by trained instructors who teach techniques step by step and adapt activities to each age group. Session length, the class timetable and what else to bring are not published - ask the provider.
