About Deep Dive Dubai

Deep Dive Dubai is an indoor diving pool in Nad Al Sheba 1, built to look like an oyster shell in a nod to the UAE's pearl-diving past. Inside is a flooded 'sunken city' of streets, cars and rooms to explore, in 14 million litres of fresh water kept at 30°C all year. The centre says its 60.02m depth is recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's deepest swimming pool for diving. For children there are three ways in: a guided surface snorkel from age 6, Scuba for Kids for ages 8-9 at a depth of up to 2m, and the non-certified scuba experience from age 10, which goes up to 12m. Children aged 10 and over can also take PADI courses, including the Junior Open Water Diver route. All equipment is included, towels are provided in the changing rooms, and parents who are not diving can watch from the cafe through large viewing windows. It is rated 4.7 on Google from 1,052 reviews.

The activity

Scuba Diving, explained

Scuba diving means breathing from an air tank so you can stay underwater and explore, rather than holding your breath. A child's first dive is a guided taster: a short briefing, a practice in shallow water, then a slow swim alongside an instructor who controls depth and pace. Kids learn to breathe calmly through a regulator, clear water from a mask and move gently with fins, which builds water confidence, body awareness and the habit of following safety rules. Most kids' try-dives are very shallow. Children who enjoy it can go on to a junior certification course, usually from around age 10, which counts towards a full diving licence later on.

Who it's for

Children who can swim. Snorkelling is for ages 6 and up; Scuba for Kids is for ages 8-9; the non-certified scuba experience and the PADI Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver courses start at age 10; PADI Advanced Open Water is listed from age 12 as Junior Advanced Open Water Diver (max 21m; the centre's FAQ gives 15 for the full rating, so confirm with the centre), and non-certified freediving starts at 13. No diving experience is needed for the snorkel or the age-10+ try-dive. From age 10, the Sunken City Walk (4m, full-face mask) needs no swimming skills. Children must be free of medical conditions that rule out diving (the centre publishes a medical list). A female guide or instructor can be requested in advance. Little Ocean Explorers, an educational field trip on marine life and ocean conservation, is listed for age 5+ (enquire by email).

What to expect

Allow two to three hours from check-in, and arrive 15-20 minutes early. Snorkelling lasts one hour on the surface, looking down on the sunken city. Scuba for Kids is a guided dive at up to 2m with an instructor. On the age-10+ try-dive, divers get a short introduction, practise in shallow water, then explore at up to 12m, normally two or three to a guide. All gear, including a wetsuit, is provided. Bring ID or a passport, your booking confirmation, swimwear, slippers and a signed waiver. A parent or guardian must stay on site and give written consent, but need not get in the water.
