About The Big Five Martial Arts Club
The Big Five Martial Arts Club is a dojo in Al Quoz, just off Sheikh Zayed Road, teaching traditional Goju-Ryu karate to children from age 4 and to teens, alongside adult classes that add boxing, kickboxing and strength and conditioning. The kids programme is split by age - Juniors (4-6), Seniors (7-9) and Pre-Teen (10-12) - and teens from 13 train in their own group, with an optional competition track. The club frames its training around five principles (character, loyalty, effort, control and etiquette) and lists discipline, focus, confidence, respect and anti-bullying strategies among what children learn. Progress is tracked with stripes awarded in class and belt tests from white to black belt, and the club says it keeps class sizes small. New students start with a trial class, listed on the club's About page at AED 99, followed by a mentorship conversation with parents. The dojo is in The Curve Building, Office M65, with on-site parking.
The activity
Martial Arts, explained
Karate teaches children balance, coordination and self-control through structured drills, forms (kata) and, as students progress, controlled sparring. Classes build focus, discipline and confidence as much as fitness, and many clubs group children by age so the techniques and pace suit their stage. A typical session opens with a warm-up, moves through technique and partner drills, and closes with a cool-down. Progress is marked with coloured belts, and some clubs add stripes between belts so younger children see steady progress. Goju-Ryu, the style taught here, is a traditional Okinawan karate style. Many children start from around age 4 or 5.
Who it's for
Children aged 4-12 in three groups - Juniors (4-6), Seniors (7-9) and Pre-Teen (10-12) - and teens aged 13-17 in the Teen Martial Arts Program. No previous martial arts experience is needed.
What to expect
Every new student starts with a trial class - the Introduction Experience - to try a session, meet the instructors and see the dojo. The About page lists it at AED 99 while paid trials are running, though the homepage still mentions a free trial, so confirm when booking. After the trial the club holds a Student Mentorship Session with parents and child to talk through goals and any challenges. In class, children earn stripes as they progress and later sit belt tests. Beginners are welcome. Ask the provider what your child should wear and bring to a first class.
