Martial Arts, explained

Kyokushin karate is a full-contact, stand-up style of Japanese karate. Training is split into three parts: kihon (basic techniques such as punches, kicks and blocks), kata (set patterns practised solo) and kumite (sparring). Children work through a belt system, with gradings marking each step up, so progress is easy to see. Sessions build fitness, focus, discipline and confidence, and a typical class moves from a warm-up into technique drills, pad and bag work and partner practice. At this dojo the youngest kids' group is for children aged 10 and under, with a separate class for 11 to 13 year olds.
