About IKO Kyokushinkai-Kan Karate Dubai Dojo

IKO Kyokushinkai-Kan Karate Dubai Dojo teaches Kyokushin, a full-contact style of Japanese karate, inside Alsalam Martial Arts Club in Al Quoz 3. Its timetable has a kids' karate class for children aged 10 and under on Sunday and Tuesday evenings, and a kids' class for 11 to 13-year-olds on Tuesdays; on Sundays, children aged 11 and up train in the combined class with adults. Thursdays are kids' fitness sessions for the same two age groups. Classes are led by Sensei Haytham Aldurazi, an IKO black belt 4th Dan and the IKO's official branch chief for the UAE, and follow the IKO syllabus of techniques, forms and sparring. Membership is paid to Alsalam Martial Arts Club, from AED 100 a day or AED 600 a month (excluding VAT), with gym access included and a family rate. Drop-ins are welcome. Confirm the current timetable and fees with the dojo before you go. The dojo is rated 5.0 on Google from 14 reviews.

The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Karate means "empty hand": a Japanese martial art of blocks, strikes and kicks, practised in three parts - kihon (basic techniques), kata (set forms) and kumite (sparring). Kyokushin is a rigorous, full-contact style founded by Masutatsu Oyama, who set up the International Karate Organisation (IKO) Kyokushinkaikan in 1964; the name means roughly "ultimate truth". Students train barefoot in a karate uniform (dogi) and move up through coloured belts, with black-belt degrees graded by the IKO. For children, regular classes build fitness, coordination, focus and respect, and grading gives a clear sense of progress. Ask the dojo how sparring is handled for younger students.

Who it's for

Children aged 10 and under (karate on Sundays and Tuesdays) and 11 to 13-year-olds (karate on Tuesdays), with kids' fitness for both groups on Thursdays; on Sundays, 11+ train in the combined class with adults, and adults train from 14. The site does not give a minimum starting age - ask the dojo how young they take beginners.

What to expect

Sessions are group classes built around kihon (techniques), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring), as taught by the IKO. Kids' karate classes run for an hour, from 5pm for the 10-and-under group and 6pm for 11 to 13-year-olds on Tuesdays. A Kyokushin karate dogi is required for the karate classes; for the Thursday kids' fitness sessions, ordinary sports kit is fine. Drop-ins are welcome, but the site gives no drop-in or trial price, so ask the dojo what a first class costs. Ask too whether beginners can borrow or buy a dogi on the day, how sparring works for younger children, and check the current timetable before your first visit.
