The activity

Dance, explained

Bharatanatyam is a classical Indian dance form built on precise footwork, hand gestures (mudras) and storytelling through facial expression. Children learn set postures and rhythmic patterns first, then short dance pieces that tell stories from Indian music and mythology. Classes build rhythm, posture, flexibility, concentration and stage confidence, and students usually work towards group performances and recitals. Many schools take complete beginners of primary-school age, and progress is steady rather than fast: strong basics come before choreography, which suits children who enjoy structure and performing.

Who it's for

Children and adults. Sunartanam's Carnatic vocal classes are for beginners, kids and adults, and its guitar classes suit beginners and enthusiasts of all ages. Its Instagram shows children's Bharatanatyam classes as well. No minimum age or age groups are published, so ask which class suits your child.

What to expect

The dance and vocal courses follow what the school calls traditional training methods, moving from the basics to performance, with guidance for graded exams and certification for students who want it. In Bharatanatyam, the school says it builds the language of hand gestures (hasta mudras) from the first class, and a July 2026 post shows children practising them in class. Guitar runs in small groups of three to four students with a Trinity-qualified teacher. Students get chances to perform, such as the school's SAMANVAYA showcase at Dubai British School, Jumeirah Park, in March 2025. Class times, fees, trial classes and what to wear are not published, so ask the provider.
