About Pots & Paints Cafe

Pots & Paints Cafe is a paint-your-own ceramics studio and cafe on the first floor of Town Centre Jumeirah, on Jumeira Street in Jumeirah 1. You pick a blank piece from the shelves, from plates, mugs and plant pots to animal shapes and money boxes, paint it at the table, and the team glazes and fires it in the kiln for you to collect about a week later. There is no booking for ceramic painting: you walk in during opening hours and paint for as long as you like, usually one to two hours. The price of the piece covers paints, brushes, stamps, stencils, sponges, glazing, firing and packaging. The cafe also offers canvas painting (bookings needed), birthday party packages in a private room for up to 20, and school trips. The kitchen serves coffee, milkshakes, cakes baked on site and meals, so parents can sit down while the children paint.

The activity

Arts & Crafts, explained

Pottery painting, often called paint-your-own ceramics, means choosing a ready-made piece of unglazed ceramic, such as a plate, mug, money box or animal figure, and decorating it with special ceramic paints. Children plan a design, brush on colours, and use sponges, stamps or stencils for effects. The studio then glazes the piece and fires it in a kiln, which sets the colours and makes it shiny, so it comes back a week or so later as something to keep or use. Colours often change in the kiln. It builds patience, fine motor skills and confidence in making something real, and no skill is needed: little ones can make hand prints while older children try detailed designs.

Who it's for

All ages: the cafe says anyone from 0 to 100 can paint ceramics, and it can take baby hand and foot prints from a few days old (come on a weekday for staff help with prints). Birthday party pricing is for children and their guests aged 4 to 14. At parties, children aged 4 to 6 need one adult each, and those parties are capped at 12 children. Families, friends and school groups all come; no art experience is needed.

What to expect

Walk in, choose a ceramic from the shelves and sit at a table (tables seat 1 to 8; bigger groups are advised to book ahead). Staff explain how the paints work and help if you are stuck. The paints are non-toxic underglazes that wash out of clothes, so mess is fine. Allow one to two hours; at busy times sessions may be limited to two hours. You leave with a collection ticket and a date: pieces take about 7 days to glaze and fire, and the cafe does not phone when they are ready. A faster 4-day firing costs an extra 50 AED. Unfinished pieces can go home and come back for an extra studio fee.
