About Ocean Kids Institute

Ocean Kids Institute runs dance, karate, art and music classes for children at two branches: Al Karama, above Ansar Gallery near Burjuman Metro Station Exit 2, and Al Nahda, opposite The Millennium School. Dance starts at age 4, with a Beginner group for ages 4 to 8 and an Intermediate group for 9 and above; karate and art also take children from 4, and music from 6. The music programme covers keyboard, guitar, violin, piano, drums, saxophone and western vocal, and students can prepare for Trinity College London exams from Initial to Grade 8. Most classes run as group lessons twice a week, 8 classes a month, on weekdays or weekends. The academy says it is registered with Dubai's KHDA. It suits families who want one place for a few different activities, and a free trial class lets your child try before you register.

The activity

Dance, explained

Ocean Kids teaches several activities under one roof, and dance is the headline programme. Beginners aged 4 to 8 learn a mix of Freestyle, Bollywood and Western dance, and children from 9 move on to Bollywood, Western, Freestyle, Contemporary and Hip-Hop, with a new choreography most months. Dance builds rhythm, coordination, flexibility and confidence, and students get the chance to perform on stage and enter competitions. The academy also runs karate and art (from age 4) and music lessons on keyboard, guitar, violin, piano, drums, saxophone and vocal (from age 6), so siblings with different interests can attend the same branch.

Who it's for

Children from age 4 for dance, karate and art, and from age 6 for music; the academy does not take children aged 3. Dance is split into Beginner (4 to 8) and Intermediate (9 and above). Adults are taught too, so older siblings and parents can join some classes.

What to expect

Start with a free trial: 30 minutes for dance, art or karate, and 15-20 minutes for music, after which you can talk to the teacher about the syllabus. Regular classes are group lessons of one hour, twice a week. Parents are not allowed in the classroom, so plan to wait outside. Kids wear track pants, shoes and the Ocean Kids T-shirt (included in the one-off registration fee), and karate students need the uniform (AED 63). Bring a water bottle. Instruments are provided for music lessons except violin.
