The activity
Gymnastics, explained
Gymnastics teaches children to control their own bodies: rolls, jumps, cartwheels, handstands and balances on the floor, then skills on apparatus and the trampoline as they progress. It builds strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness, and younger children also practise listening, taking turns in a group and trying something new with confidence. Many clubs start children at around three with playful introductory classes, then move them into levelled classes where each new skill builds on the last. Kids train barefoot in fitted clothing, and progress is steady rather than instant, which is part of what makes it a good long-term sport for active children.
Who it's for
Boys and girls from age 3. Star Kids (3-5) is an introduction to gymnastics; Beginner (ages 3-11) is for children with 0-6 months' experience; Intermediate (ages 5-14) is for gymnasts with 6 months to 2 years' experience who are confident with rolls, jumps, cartwheels and handstands; Advanced (aged 7+) is for gymnasts with over three years' experience. Recreational classes are for boys and girls 3+ of all abilities; the Girls and Boys programmes, Trampoline and Private lessons are for all ages and levels. Children with no gymnastics experience are welcome.
What to expect
Start with a trial class: you can walk in Monday to Friday at your child's age-group time (3-4 years 2PM, 4-6 years 3PM, 6-9 years 4PM, 8+ 6PM). Saturday trials are limited and need confirming in advance, and there are no Sunday trials. After the session the coach suggests the right class. Children train barefoot: girls in a bodysuit, tights or athletic shorts with no buttons and a fitted T-shirt; boys in gym shorts with no buttons, zips or pockets and a fitted, tucked-in T-shirt. Tie long hair back and leave jewellery at home. Parents can watch from the upstairs viewing area.
