The activity

Gymnastics, explained

Rhythmic gymnastics is an Olympic discipline that mixes gymnastics with dance. Gymnasts perform routines to music on a large carpet, working with hand apparatus such as the rope, hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon. Beginners spend their early sessions on flexibility, posture, balance and simple throws and catches, then gradually learn full routines. Ballet is usually part of training because it builds the clean lines, turnout and body awareness the sport depends on. Along the way children develop strength, coordination, rhythm and focus. Children often start young, and each club sets its own age bands and levels, so check with the club.
