Music Lessons, explained

Indian classical music and dance lessons teach children an art form passed down through the guru-shishya tradition, where a teacher guides each student step by step. In Kathak, a classical dance from North India, children learn rhythmic footwork, spins and storytelling through expression and gesture. Hindustani classical vocal training works on raag (the melodic framework), taal (rhythm) and voice control, and often extends into semi-classical songs. Instruments such as tabla, harmonium and keyboard build a sense of rhythm and melody. Many schools run graded courses with yearly exams, so children can see their progress level by level.

Who it's for

The vocal course is open to students of all age groups; the Google listing also marks the centre as good for kids. Kathak and instrument courses run from the beginner Praveshika level up to Praveen; minimum starting ages for children are not published, so ask the provider.

What to expect

Kathak and instrument classes last 1 hour and run twice a week, and courses move through graded levels from Praveshika to Praveen. Students sit a two-tier exam system: an internal Aadi Shakti exam and the Prayag Sangeet Samiti exam, with theory exams in July and practicals in October. To start, parents fill in the registration form on the website, choosing the course (Kathak, vocal, keyboard, harmonium, tabla or guitar), in-person or online, and whether the child has prior training. Fees, uniform or kit, and whether a trial class is offered are not published, so ask the provider.
