9 Miles Swimming Academy is a Dubai swim school founded in the UAE in 2023. It is named after 9 Miles Beach in Cape Town, where founder and head coach Kyle Koopman found his love of swimming, and the academy says he has over 10 years of experience. The core offer is a learn-to-swim programme split into eight levels, built around water safety, water confidence and enjoyment. Lessons run 30 minutes at Levels 1-5, 45 minutes at Level 6 and one hour at Levels 7-8, and fees are charged per term. Swimmers who progress can join the squads, which the academy runs as Foundation, Development and Performance groups focused on technique, competitive preparation and personal growth. It also teaches adult beginner and intermediate classes, so parents can learn too. New swimmers start with a free assessment, booked over WhatsApp. The website lists its location as Dubai, DIC, and Google places the academy in the Jabal Ali First - Al Furjan area.

The activity

Swimming, explained

Learn-to-swim lessons take a child from getting comfortable in the water to swimming full strokes on their own. Early levels cover water safety, floating, kicking and moving through the water with confidence. Later levels add proper technique in front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, plus longer distances and stamina. Swimming builds fitness, coordination and breath control, and above all it is a life-saving skill in a city full of pools and beaches. Many children start formal lessons around three or four, although swim schools set their own entry ages. Swimmers who enjoy it can move on to squad training, with more sessions a week and a focus on technique, fitness and racing.

Who it's for

Children learning to swim from the very first steps (Levels 1-5) through to confident stroke swimmers (Levels 7-8), then squad swimmers who want to train and compete. The academy does not publish age bands for its levels or squads, so ask which level suits your child; a free assessment places new swimmers. Adults can join separate beginner and intermediate classes.

What to expect

A first visit starts with a free assessment, which you book through the academy's WhatsApp. The coach watches your child swim and suggests a level from the eight-level programme. Lessons are 30 minutes for Levels 1-5, 45 minutes for Level 6 and an hour for Levels 7-8. The academy's dress code asks for proper swimwear (rash guards are fine), a swim cap for long hair, and flip-flops or pool shoes around the pool; goggles are strongly encouraged. Bring a towel, shower before swimming and leave jewellery at home. Class sizes and the weekly class timetable are not published, so ask the provider when you book the assessment.
