About My Sports Academy

My Sports Academy (MSA) is a Dubai sports coaching company that runs swimming lessons in school pools around the city rather than at a venue of its own. Its Learn to Swim programme takes children through seven stages, with colour-coded levels such as Perky Pink, Racey Red and Groovey Green. The weekly schedule shows sessions Monday to Saturday at six schools: Jumeira Baccalaureate School, Dubai Schools Al Barsha, Brighton College, Dubai British School Jumeira, Dubai British School Mira and English College Umm Suqeim. Swimmers who want more can join My Swim Club, which has a Performance Pathway towards national and international competition and a more relaxed Evolution Pathway. A Born to Swim page describes parent-and-baby classes for 6 months to 3 years, and MSA also runs school netball and adult swimming. Fees are charged by the term. The site does not publish Learn to Swim prices or session times, so book the free assessment and ask.

The activity

Swimming, explained

Swimming lessons teach children to be safe and confident in water first, then build proper strokes. Early lessons focus on water confidence: putting the face in, floating, kicking and moving through the water with support. As children progress they learn front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke, then breathing, turns and treading water, and some go on to butterfly and racing. Most swim schools group children by level rather than age and move them up through badges or stages as they pass skills. Swimming builds fitness, coordination and a life skill that matters in a city full of pools and beaches. Parent-and-baby classes can start from a few months old, and group lessons often start around age three or four.

Who it's for

Children learning to swim from scratch through to competitive swimmers. Learn to Swim is split into seven stages, and coaches fit the skills to each child; the site does not publish age bands for it, so ask. My Swim Club's Performance Pathway is for swimmers aiming at competitions, while its Evolution Pathway suits late developers and children who want to swim with less commitment. Born to Swim is for babies and toddlers aged 6 months to 3 years with a parent. School netball runs from FS to Year 6, and there is a separate Adult Swim programme for grown-ups.

What to expect

Start by registering for the free assessment offered on the Learn to Swim and My Swim Club pages, so a coach can place your child at the right stage. Lessons take place at school pools; the Pools page says each venue has a 25m training pool. Coaches adapt the stage's skills to your child. Fees are termly and paid before your child starts, joining part-way through a term is pro-rated, and single lessons are not sold unless stated. Missed lessons are not refunded or made up, except when MSA cancels a session or after three or more consecutive sessions missed through illness, with a doctor's note. Ask which pool and time slot suit your child, and what to bring.
