Wood Wizards Dubai is a children's woodworking studio at Creek Beach in Dubai Creek Harbour (Summer 1 building, Retail 13). It is the Dubai franchise of Wood Wizards, a brand with studios in several countries, and the Dubai studio is run by a couple with engineering and construction backgrounds who say their own two children inspired them to open it. Children aged 5 and up use real, child-sized tools to measure, saw, sand, drill, nail and paint their own projects, and every finished piece goes home with them. No experience is needed and all tools and materials are provided. You can book a one-off Try Hour, private one-to-one hours, 90-minute group sessions of up to 10, or a family session, and there is a Saturday & Sunday Club in two-hour slots. For younger siblings aged 2 and up, a toddler play area is set up with a natural wood construction set. On Google it holds 5 stars from 189 reviews.

The activity

Woodwork, explained

Woodwork for children means real carpentry at a child-sized scale. Kids measure, saw, sand, drill, nail, screw, glue and paint small pieces of wood until they have built something of their own, such as a toy, a box or a birdhouse, which they take home. Tools are scaled down for small hands and safety rules come first, so a beginner starts with one skill at a time before moving on. It builds hand-eye coordination, grip strength and fine motor control, and it quietly brings in maths: size, shape and measurement. Many children also find the focus it needs calming. Most programmes start at around five years old.

Who it's for

Children aged 5 and up for the workshop sessions and the Saturday & Sunday Club. The Toddler Playground is for ages 2+. Family sessions are private sessions for a group of three, with extra participants charged. No prior experience is needed. The provider's workshop pages say its workshops are inclusive, including children with special needs; ask the provider about your child's needs before booking.

What to expect

New children start with the Try Hour: an individual one-hour trial session on the first visit, AED 230. The provider's outline for its weekly woodwork course (written for its after-school groups) starts with materials, tools, safety equipment and rules, and each later session opens with a recap, the day's tools and the safety rules again; early skills include measuring, sanding, hand-drilling, nailing, screwing, gluing, painting and sawing. Ask the provider how a studio session is structured. Children work with specially designed child-size tools and take their finished pieces home. All tools and materials are provided; ask the provider what your child should wear.
