About The Makers Society
The Makers Society is a woodworking studio in Al Jumairi Building, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area 3, and it runs two paths for children. One-Day Workshops for ages 6+ start from AED 250: a child picks a project, such as a wooden airplane, and builds it with hand tools in a small group, then takes it home. The Kids Woodworking Academy is a structured term for ages 10-15: 10 weekly sessions of 1 hour 45 minutes on Friday afternoons, with two instructors for ten children. Term 1 covers timber basics and how to use and care for hand tools, and builds towards a finished project, usually a mallet and a box. Eva, the studio's co-founder, leads the Academy with tutors Nazrana and Joel. Children aged 10 and up can try a 2-hour Hand Tools Trial first, a mixed class with adults. The studio has a 4.9 rating on Google from 185 reviews.
The activity
Woodwork, explained
Kids' woodworking is real carpentry scaled to a child: measuring, marking, sawing, drilling, sanding and assembling solid timber into something they take home. It builds patience, accuracy, spatial thinking and hand control, and it teaches children to treat tools with respect because safe habits are part of every step. Good kids' classes start with hand tools, short guided tasks and protective eyewear, then build towards multi-step projects that need planning. Children are often ready for a supervised one-off project from around six, while longer structured courses suit older children who can follow a sequence of instructions on their own. At The Makers Society, workshops start at 6 and the Academy at 10.
Who it's for
Children aged 6+ for One-Day Workshops, and ages 10-15 for the Kids Woodworking Academy; the studio considers younger children for the Academy on request, case by case. No previous experience is needed for either. The Hand Tools Trial is from age 10 and mixes adults and children.
What to expect
For ages 10 and up, the easiest first step is the Hand Tools Trial: AED 150, 2 hours, Sundays at 11:30AM, in a mixed class of adults and children. The fee counts towards the Academy if you enrol within 3 days. Academy students must buy a starter tool kit (a Japanese hand saw and a wooden hand plane, AED 279), which they keep. Wood, materials and safety equipment are included. Younger children can start with a One-Day Workshop, where hand tools, materials and safety eyewear are provided. Parents can wait in the studio's social area during Academy sessions. Bookings are non-refundable. Workshops allow one free reschedule if you ask more than 24 hours ahead.
