About Trojan Sports Academy
Trojan Sports Academy is a swim school based at the 50-metre pool at the Dubai Police Academy in Al Sufouh, near Mall of the Emirates and the Burj Al Arab. It runs three strands: baby swimming from 3 months with a parent in the water, a Learn to Swim programme from 3 years taught to the Swim England framework, and competitive squads from 6 years. The academy calls itself a Swim England International Learn to Swim provider, and teachers award Swim England badges alongside its own Trojan Traits awards for character. Standard Learn to Swim lessons run 40 minutes rather than the usual 30, and advanced groups 50 minutes, which the academy says leaves time for teachers to talk parents through what their child is learning. The pool is fully shaded and temperature controlled, with a spectator area where families can watch. New swimmers start with a free assessment to find the right level, and Learn to Swim lessons are priced per lesson, from 95 AED plus VAT.
The activity
Swimming, explained
Swimming lessons take children from getting comfortable in the water to swimming all four strokes: front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Babies usually start in the water with a parent, learning to float, kick and blow bubbles through songs and games. From around three, children join small groups with a teacher, working on water confidence, safety skills and short distances on their front and back. Older, stronger swimmers refine technique over longer distances, and some move into squads that train several times a week and race in galas. Along the way it builds water safety, fitness, coordination and confidence, which matters in a city surrounded by pools and beaches.
Who it's for
Children from 3 months to 16 years. Baby swimming (Tetra 1-3) covers 3 to 29 months on the baby-swimming page (the home page says 3 to 36 months) with a parent in the water; Trojan Tiny Tadpoles is for 2.5 to 3 years; Learn to Swim levels start at 3 years; squads start from 6 years on the squads page (the home page says 7 and older; entry is by assessment) for confident swimmers who can already swim 25m of all four strokes. Complete beginners are welcome in the Level 1 classes. The academy says it is open to all children and asks families of children with learning difficulties to get in touch to discuss their needs.
What to expect
Register online (free), then book a free assessment at the pool, where a teacher checks your child's level and recommends a group. The home page also mentions four complimentary full class trials for new members; ask the academy how these work before you book. Come 'swim ready': costume or shorts, goggles, a cap and a towel. Your child gets a Trojan cap at the first lesson. Beginner classes start at one teacher to two swimmers, and baby sessions last 30 minutes with a parent in the water. Parents, and the rest of the family, are welcome to watch from the spectator area. Children aged 8 and under need a parent or guardian at the pool for the whole lesson.
