About ThreadWerk

ThreadWerk is a sewing and crochet studio at The Dome in Cluster N, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, which describes itself as KHDA-accredited and has been running since 2018. Alongside adult courses and a fabric shop, it runs a full ladder of children's classes. Six- to eight-year-olds start in the Mini Sewing Bees Club, a weekly one-hour hand-sewing session. From nine, children can take the five-session Kids & Teens Sewing Beginner Workshop, where they learn the sewing machine and make a tote bag, drawstring bag, pyjama shorts and a zipped pouch, then move on to the weekly Kids & Teens Sewing Club. The Kids & Teens Crochet Club, also 9+, welcomes complete beginners. All materials are included in the kids' classes, and beginner groups are capped at nine. Weekly clubs are sold in packs of 5 or 10 sessions and pause over the main school holidays, when the studio runs sewing and crochet camps instead.

The activity

Sewing & Fashion, explained

Sewing classes teach children to turn flat fabric into things they can use and wear. Younger children usually start with hand sewing: threading a needle safely, learning running stitch and back stitch, and finishing small felt or fabric projects. From around nine, many move on to a sewing machine, learning to thread it, sew straight lines and corners, cut and pin fabric, and put in a zip. Crochet is the yarn-and-hook cousin, built stitch by stitch. Along the way children practise fine motor control, patience, following step-by-step instructions and finishing what they start, and they go home with something real they made themselves.

Who it's for

Children aged 6-8 (Mini Sewing Bees, hand sewing, no experience needed); 9+ complete beginners (Kids & Teens Sewing Beginner Workshop, Kids & Teens Crochet Club); 9+ confident beginners who can already thread a machine and sew straight lines (Kids & Teens Sewing Club). The site also describes a Teenage Maker workshop for 13+, but no dates are on the booking calendar; ask the provider. Teens 15+ can join the adult Beginner Sewing Course. Adults have separate classes.

What to expect

Beginner groups are small: the studio caps beginner courses at nine students and needs at least two booked to run. Everything is provided for the kids' classes, including fabric or yarn, tools and use of the studio's Brother and Bernette machines, and children can bring their own machine or yarn if they prefer. In the machine workshops, the first session covers getting to know the machine; if your child is bringing their own, bring it from day one. The beginner sewing workshop sends children home with four finished projects. There is no single-session trial: clubs are sold in packs of 5 or 10, and all bookings are prepaid.
