About Designers Collective Institute
Designers Collective Institute is a design school in Indigo Tower, JLT Cluster D, teaching adults and children: interior design, architecture, fashion, jewellery, photography and portfolios. For young sewists there are age-banded beginner courses: Fashion Design + Pattern and Stitching for ages 8 to 10, 11 to 13, 12 to 14 and 15 to 18, and Pattern and Stitching for Teens aged 14 to 16. Each is listed at 18 hours for AED 2,530, with up to 10 places. In the Fashion Design + Pattern and Stitching courses, students move from fashion design basics and fabric choice to drafting a pattern, stitching and assembling a piece; the 14 to 16 course covers pattern making, fabric decoration and painting, and ends with a personalised tote bag to take home. Tools and materials are provided in class; fabric is bought separately for each project. The institute says courses run all the time and you can join any weekly batch. It is listed as women-owned on Google, and its FAQ says it teaches in English, Arabic and French.
The activity
Sewing & Fashion, explained
Sewing and fashion design classes teach children how clothes are made, from idea to finished piece. Kids sketch outfits, learn how different fabrics behave, take measurements, draft a simple paper pattern, cut fabric and stitch it together, first by hand and then on a sewing machine. Along the way they practise patience, careful measuring, fine motor control and following steps in order, and they finish with something real they can wear or carry. Many children start around 8, once they can handle scissors and pins safely and concentrate for a longer session; sewing machines usually come in once the basics are secure.
Who it's for
Children and teens who love clothes, drawing and making things. The sewing courses are split into age bands: 8 to 10, 11 to 13, 12 to 14 and 15 to 18 (Fashion Design + Pattern and Stitching) and 14 to 16 (Pattern and Stitching for Teens), all marked beginner level. The site also lists age-banded kids' and teens' courses in drawing, interior design, architecture, photography and jewellery. Support for children with additional needs is not published: ask the provider.
What to expect
Courses are booked by the number of training hours (18 hours for the kids' and teens' sewing courses) and run in small batches of up to 10. The Fashion Design + Pattern and Stitching outline starts with an introduction to fashion design, then fabric fundamentals, pattern making, stitching techniques and construction. The 14 to 16 Pattern and Stitching course covers measuring, fabric preparation, safe cutting and stitching and fabric painting, and finishes with a personalised tote bag. All tools and materials are provided; fabric is extra and depends on the project. Extra hours can be booked if needed. Session days and times and whether a trial class is offered are not published: ask the provider.
