Surfing lessons for beginners happen on soft boards in small waves close to the shore. A coach talks kids through lying on the board, paddling and popping up to stand, first in the broken white water and then, as confidence grows, on small unbroken waves. Along the way they learn to read the sea, respect currents and fall safely. It builds balance, core strength, water confidence and plenty of persistence - most kids fall many times before they stand, and that is part of the fun. Lessons are weather-dependent, so coaches check the conditions on the day. Many surf schools start children from around five or six.
