About Studio 100 Jiu Jitsu
Studio 100 Jiu Jitsu is a traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Motor City, upstairs in the Kojak Building on Detroit Road, above Carrefour Market. It calls itself a family academy and is owned and led by Professors Alex Monsalve and Warren Subel, with a lineage it traces back to Carlos and Helio Gracie. The Kids Programme covers ages 3-15 in separate groups: Little Grapplers (3-4) learn through games, Fundamentals (5-6) adds more structure, Kids (7-11) works on verbal Jiu-Jitsu and character development, and Teens (12-15) train with their peers. Kids classes run on weekday afternoons (from 3:30PM on Monday and Wednesday, 4:30PM on Tuesday and Thursday, 1:30PM on Friday) and on Saturday mornings, and there is a kids Muay Thai class on Saturdays too. Your child's first session is a free introduction with no commitment, and the academy places them in the right class. Membership starts at AED 650 a month on subscription, with family discounts available. It holds 4.7 on Google from 178 reviews.
The activity
Jiu-Jitsu, explained
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art: instead of punching or kicking, children learn to use leverage, balance and timing to control a partner on the ground and get to safety. Kids train in a Gi (the jacket-and-trousers uniform with a coloured belt) and sometimes no-Gi, in classes grouped by age. The youngest classes are mostly games with structure built in; older children drill techniques and learn to stay calm under pressure. Along with strength, flexibility and body awareness, BJJ puts a lot of weight on respect, discipline and confidence. Many clubs start children at 3 or 4, and no experience is needed to begin.
Who it's for
Children aged 3-15, in four groups: Little Grapplers (ages 3-4), Fundamentals (5-6), Kids (7-11) and Teens (12-15). The timetable splits the 7-11s into Kids 7-8 and Kids 9-11 classes, with levels inside each group. No experience is needed. There are adult classes too, so parents can train as well.
What to expect
The first session is a free introduction: the academy says it will place your child in the right class, with no experience needed and no commitment, and you talk about membership after they have trained. Book it by phone or WhatsApp on +971 58 571 6838 or through the contact form on the website. The youngest group (3-4) is game-based, 'fun first, so they want to come back'. Classes are grouped by age and skill so children are not overwhelmed. Showers are on site. The website does not say what kit a first-timer needs, so ask the provider whether your child needs a Gi.
