Star Volleyball Academy runs youth volleyball coaching at venues across Dubai, including Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Mirdif and Mudon. Timetables, age groups and venues are set per venue, so check the one you pick. At Jumeirah, the venue is listed on the academy's timetable as Jumeirah School (JBS), with sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for ages 9 to 12 and 13 to 18, and the same venue hosts the academy's U19 and adult UAE league teams and selection squads. The academy says its coaches are FIVB-qualified, and beginners are welcome: new players are placed in a group that fits their age and level. Families buy training as a package of 4, 20 or 40 weeks, once or twice a week, and can book a free trial class first. Progress is tracked through structured reports each term and the academy's own parent app, which shows coach targets, feedback, fitness scores and session reminders. The academy is part of Star Sport Academies, which also runs football, basketball and badminton academies.

The activity

Volleyball, explained

Volleyball is a fast team sport played over a high net, where players work together to serve, pass, set and attack the ball before it touches the floor. Beginners usually start with underhand serves, forearm passes and basic court positioning, then move on to setting, spiking and blocking as their strength and timing grow. Because every rally depends on teammates talking and covering for each other, it builds communication and trust as well as coordination, agility, jumping power and quick decisions. It suits children who enjoy being part of a squad, and many clubs start children from around six or seven.

Who it's for

Boys and girls, from complete beginners to competitive players; the academy says the programme starts at 6 and runs up to 21, and its locations page describes the main youth programme as ages 7-18. Age groups differ by venue: at Jumeirah the regular groups are 9-12 and 13-18, with separate selection, U19 league and adult league sessions. The FAQ says boys and girls train in separate groups. Ask the venue you pick which groups run there.

What to expect

Start by booking a free trial class through the academy's online trial form and choosing your venue; the team then confirms which group suits your child's age, experience and availability. At Jumeirah, the 9-12 group trains 5:30-6:30pm and the 13-18 group 6:30-7:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays; other venues have their own timetables, so ask. Children should bring sports clothing, indoor sports shoes and a water bottle, and knee pads for advanced groups; the academy uniform is required once enrolled. Sessions cover passing, serving, setting, attacking, positioning and teamwork, with progress reports each term and coach feedback in the parent app.
