Simply Gymnastics is an artistic gymnastics club in Dubai Investment Park 2, set up in September 2014 and run by founder Lise Slane with senior coach Mel. It takes children from age 3, from complete beginners to competitive gymnasts. Beginner classes teach the basic skills and shapes; development classes follow a measurable learning programme so each child progresses at their own pace; and children who show aptitude in flexibility and strength are invited into the squad teams, which follow the UAE-adapted FIG programme and compete locally and regionally. The club says its classes are open to all children, including those with learning difficulties, and it partners with Sensation Station and Heroes of Hope. The timetable also has parent-and-toddler, family, home-schooler and adult sessions. It runs three terms a year on the British schools calendar, with camps between terms, and offers a free trial class all year round. Fees start at AED 45 + VAT an hour, depending on how many hours your child trains.

The activity

Gymnastics, explained

Artistic gymnastics teaches children balance, flexibility, coordination and strength. Beginners learn the basic shapes and skills - rolls, cartwheels, bridges, jumps - before moving on to apparatus such as bars, beam and vault as they progress. Many clubs run recreational and competitive tracks side by side, so a child can train for fun or, if a coach spots the aptitude, move into a squad that competes. The strength and body awareness it builds carry over into most other sports, and classes at many clubs start from around age 3, with parent-and-toddler sessions for younger children.

Who it's for

Children aged 3 and up, from beginners to competitive gymnasts; there are also parent-and-toddler, family time, home-schooler and adult (Fitnastics) sessions. The club says its classes are open to all children, including those with learning difficulties.

What to expect

Start with the free trial class, which the club offers all year round; book it through the contact page, by phone or by email. Beginner classes cover the basic skills and shapes a gymnast needs, and children then move into development classes that follow a measurable learning programme. Coaches watch for aptitude and may invite a child into a squad team that competes. Fees are paid termly, upfront and in full, and once the free trial has taken place there are no refunds, only credits. For kit and what to bring, ask the provider.
