About Phonic Tots
Phonic Tots is a small early-literacy studio on the central plaza of The Sustainable City, set up to help families give children aged 1.5 to 5 a head start with reading and writing. Classes are adult-and-child: a mum, dad or nanny always joins in. The hour-long Phonics classes follow Phase One and Phase Two phonics through songs, rhymes, listening games, movement with scarves and 'disco dough', and one story mastered each half term, in age groups from 1.5-2.5 up to 2.5-4 years. Stay & Play sessions run for two or three hours, like a morning at nursery with a snack, a story and two carpet times. For older preschoolers there is FS Booster Phonics with teacher Georgina and a Small Group Arabic phonics class with teacher Yasmine. Term 1 runs from Monday 31 August to Friday 11 December (15 weeks).
The activity
Phonics, explained
Phonics teaches children to hear, say and blend the sounds in words, which is how most UK-curriculum schools start reading and writing. Before any letters appear, the earliest stage (often called Phase One) is all listening: rhymes, songs, sound games, alliteration and oral blending, plus lots of movement that builds the hand strength and coordination needed for writing later. Toddlers can join classes like these with a parent or nanny from around 18 months; by three or four, children start linking sounds to letters, blending sounds to read simple words and practising early handwriting patterns, ready for FS2 or KG.
Who it's for
Children aged 1.5 to 5 with a mum, dad or nanny, who must stay for the whole class. Phonics classes are grouped 1.5-2.5, 1.5-3.5 and 2.5-4 years; Stay & Play and Explorer Time take 1.5-5 years; FS Booster Phonics and Small Group Arabic are for 3-5 year olds (FS2/Year 1 or KG1/KG2 level). The Arabic phonics class is open to children whether or not the family speaks Arabic. The Sunday Toddle Toes Dance & Play session is listed for 1.5-6 years.
What to expect
You stay with your child for the whole session and join in. A Phonics class lasts 60 minutes and is led by a UK-qualified teacher: a short teacher-led carpet part with puppet characters, then songs, rhymes, listening games and movement. Children who want to watch from the side can; there is no pressure to join the carpet until they are ready. Trials are paid (AED 70 for Phonics or FS Booster Phonics, AED 120 for a 2-hour Stay & Play). New families pay a one-off AED 160 welcome pack with a Phonic Tots t-shirt and bag, free with a package. Booking in advance is required.
