About Little Owls Child Skills Training Institute
Little Owls is a small learning centre at 303 Prime Business Centre in JVC, founded in October 2022 by Cheryl, a UK-trained primary teacher with an early years specialism who has worked in the UAE for more than a decade. It runs small-group classes in three subjects: Phonics to Writing, which follows the Read Write Inc. programme; Creative Writing for Years 3 to 6; and Problem-Solving with Numbers, for FS1 to Year 6. The centre calls its classes screen-free: no iPads or tablets, just real books, writing and hands-on maths kit. Groups are small (the phonics classes take a maximum of six children) and children stay with the same teacher through the term wherever possible, with weekly progress updates for parents. The activity
Phonics, explained
Phonics teaches children to read and write by linking the sounds of spoken English to the letters and letter groups that spell them. Children learn sounds one by one, practise forming each letter, then blend sounds together to read simple words and split words into sounds to spell them. Short daily practice with decodable books builds fluency, and writing grows from single words to full sentences. In UK-curriculum schools phonics starts in the early years, around age 3 to 5, and most children have the core code by the end of Year 2. Older children who missed parts of it can catch up with targeted small-group work on reading fluency and spelling.
Who it's for
Children from Foundation Stage to Year 6. Phonics to Writing is aimed at FS1, FS2, Year 1 and Year 2 (ages 3-7), with targeted phonics and literacy support for Years 3-6 who need to catch up. Creative Writing is for Years 3 to 6. Problem-Solving with Numbers runs from FS1 to Year 6 (ages 3-12), adapted to each child's level. The Home Explorers Circle is listed for FS to Year 6. What to expect
The first step is a free consultation and assessment: you book by WhatsApp or the website form, then visit the JVC centre with your child. A teacher assesses your child's level, talks through your goals and recommends a class and level; Cheryl leads the consultations herself. Classes are small and screen-free, using real books, writing and hands-on maths materials, and parents get weekly progress updates. All materials and resources, including story books, writing books and optional homework, are included in the fees, so there is nothing to buy.
