The activity

Gymnastics, explained

Gymnastics teaches children balance, flexibility, coordination and body control. A typical class opens with a warm-up and stretching, then moves through skill stations such as rolls, cartwheels, handstands and jumps, with beam, bars and vault brought in as children progress. Skills are broken into small steps, so kids can see themselves improving week by week. The strength and spatial awareness it builds carry over into other sports and into everyday playground confidence. Many children start in pre-school classes at around three or four, then move into structured groups or squads through the primary years.
