The activity

Swimming, explained

Swimming lessons take children from their first splash to confident, safe swimming. Little ones start with water confidence: getting their face wet, blowing bubbles, floating and kicking with support. As they grow in confidence they move on to the four main strokes - front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly - along with breathing technique and stamina. Lessons are usually taught in small groups sorted by age and ability, so a nervous beginner and a child already swimming lengths are not in the same class. Swimming builds a life-saving skill, fitness and coordination, and many families start from around three years old.

Who it's for

Toddlers (3-5 years), kids (5-16 years) and adults (16 and above), as listed in the academy's training plans. Ladies-only time is listed for Saturday and Sunday 1-3pm at the Dubai academy; ask the branch you pick. For children under 3, ask the provider.

What to expect

Start with the free trial class the academy advertises ("Dive In for Free!"), then choose a 1, 3 or 6-month offer or the 1-month individual option. The website lists the strokes taught - crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly - and says the pool area is regularly cleaned, with changing rooms and showers. Exact class times, lesson length, group size and what to bring are not published, so ask the branch you pick when you book the trial; the trial form lets you choose Dubai or Sharjah.
