About Fly High Fitness

Fly High Fitness is a large family gym on 72nd Street in Dubai Investment Park 1, and gymnastics is at the heart of its kids programme. The club describes itself as the UAE's largest gymnastics facility, with 70,000 sq ft and more than 280 free parking spaces. Artistic gymnastics starts with a toddler class where a parent joins in, then runs through beginner and badge classes to a competitive programme that follows the USA Gymnastics levels 1-10, with in-house and club competitions. The kids timetable also includes rhythmic gymnastics for girls, trampoline and tumbling, dance, swimming, kickboxing, CrossFit Kids, aerial hammock and silk, and cheerleading. Football is also on offer, but those sessions run at Dove Green Private School opposite the gym. Gymnastics is sold in 16-week terms, from AED 1,664 for one class a week. Parents can book a free kids assessment or free class, and train themselves while their child is in class. It's rated 4.6 on Google from 515 reviews.

The activity

Gymnastics, explained

Gymnastics builds the basics almost every other sport relies on: balance, flexibility, strength, coordination and body control. Younger children learn rolls, jumps, handstands and simple swings on bars, beam and vault, usually through play; older and keener gymnasts move into levelled programmes with routines on each apparatus and, if they want, competitions. It also teaches children to listen, wait their turn and keep trying at a skill that takes many attempts. Many children start in a parent-and-child class around age 3, then move into classes on their own from about 4 or 5.

Who it's for

Gymnastics runs from a toddler class for 2.5-3.5-year-olds, with a parent alongside, to Beginners for 4-5-year-olds, then Advanced, Excel and Elite classes open to any age by level. The kids timetable lists these as Parent & Me (3-4 years, boys and girls), First Steps (4-5, boys and girls), then separate girls' and boys' badge and level groups up to Elite. Rhythmic gymnastics is girls only (4-12 on the timetable); trampoline and tumbling is for girls and boys aged 5-14.

What to expect

Start with a free kids assessment or free class, booked through the website, by phone or on WhatsApp; the club advises that a qualified coach assesses children before they join a class. In the toddler class, little ones walk on beams, hang on monkey bars, jump and roll on soft mats with their parent beside them. From Beginners (4-5 years), each class opens with a warm-up and stretching, then children learn forward and backward rolls, handstands and swings on the bars, rings and vault. Ask the provider what your child should wear and bring.
