The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art built around kicks, strikes and set patterns called poomsae, with coloured belts marking each step of progress. A typical class mixes a warm-up, technique drills, pattern work and, as children move up, controlled sparring. It builds balance, coordination and fitness, and the bowing, listening and turn-taking give children a clear, structured way to practise focus and self-control. Many clubs take children from around four, with younger beginners taught separately from older juniors, teens and adults, so it suits both a first sport and a child who wants to compete later on.

Who it's for

Children from age 4: the Toddler Class is for ages 4 to 6 and the Kids Class for ages 6 to 12. Teenagers and adults have their own programme, and the sparring and poomsae classes are open to all levels, from beginners to students preparing for competitions. The centre also mentions classes for families.

What to expect

Start with the free trial lesson, an introductory session the centre offers new students. The Toddler Class (ages 4-6) focuses on balance, coordination, listening and following directions; the Kids Class (ages 6-12) builds strength, focus, respect and teamwork through structured technique. Training follows a belt-based curriculum, and children who want more can join the sparring and poomsae classes, which are open to all levels. Class times, fees, class length and what to wear for the trial are not on the website, so ask the provider when you book.
