About Malhaar Centre for Performing Arts
Malhaar Centre for Performing Arts teaches Indian classical music and dance at this centre in Tiffany Tower, JLT, and at a second centre in Bur Dubai opposite BurJuman. Its course list covers Hindustani and Carnatic vocals and light music; instruments including tabla, sitar, sarod, Indian classical violin, dholak, keyboard and guitar; and Kathak, Bharatanatyam and Odissi dance. Students range from age 3 to adults, in group or one-to-one lessons. Teaching follows the guru-shishya tradition under the school's 'Listen, Learn and Perform' model, and Malhaar says it is KHDA approved and affiliated with Prayag Sangeet Samiti, ISTD London and Trinity College London. Hindustani vocal has a published syllabus of 6 levels and 18 modules, from first breath to concert-format performance. The centre opened in 2016, growing out of a Dubai arts project that began in 2008, and reports 5,670 students across its programmes. A free trial class can be booked online, so your child can try an art form and meet a guru before you commit.
The activity
Music Lessons, explained
Indian classical music and dance lessons follow the guru-shishya (teacher and student) tradition: children listen closely, copy the teacher, practise, then perform. In vocal classes such as Hindustani singing, beginners start with breathing, holding a steady note and the seven swaras (notes) before learning their first ragas. Instrument classes like tabla or sitar build rhythm, finger control and a feel for taal (rhythm cycles), while classical dance styles such as Kathak and Bharatanatyam combine footwork, expression and storytelling. Along the way children build concentration, listening skills, memory and the confidence to perform in front of others. At Malhaar, students can start from age 3.
Who it's for
Children from age 3 through to adults - Malhaar says its students range from 3 to 82. Lessons run in group and individual formats. Most courses are open to children, but Semi-Classical Dance is listed as adults only. Age bands for each course and any special needs support are not published - ask the provider.
What to expect
Start with a free trial class, booked online through Malhaar's booking system, to meet one of the gurus and find the right starting point. Teaching follows the guru-shishya style under a 'Listen, Learn and Perform' model. For Hindustani vocal, the first level ('Pre foundation') opens with breathing exercises, voice culture and holding Sa steady for 10 seconds, then moves on to the first swaras and simple songs. Syllabuses for the other courses are not published, and nor are fees, class length or what to bring - ask the provider. Payments made through the website are non-refundable, so check the terms before paying.
