The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Shotokan karate is a Japanese martial art built around strikes, blocks, kata (set patterns of movement) and sparring, practised barefoot on a mat in a white uniform (gi). Kids' classes build focus, confidence, discipline and self-defence basics, and children move up through coloured belts as their skills grow. This academy teaches JKS (Japan Karate Shotorenmei) style Shotokan and takes children from age 6. Alongside the physical training it teaches seven character principles - perseverance, humility, agility, self-control, tolerance, empathy and respect - which it calls PHASTER.

Who it's for

Children from age 6 (the academy's minimum joining age), with no experience needed. The academy also runs Shotokan classes for teens and adults, with students ranging up to their late 60s.

What to expect

Start with a free trial class, booked through the website or on WhatsApp. At LLFPM School, classes run on high-density EVA foam mats (12-25mm thick) with a non-slip surface. Sensei Kyle Kamal Helou leads the class. Children learn technique and take part in sparring, and a structured belt system marks their progress. New students are covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee. The site doesn't say what to wear to a first class or when a uniform is needed, so ask the provider.
