Martial Arts, explained

Karate is a striking martial art built around punches, kicks, blocks and set-pattern forms (kata), with children moving up through a coloured belt system as their technique and discipline grow. Shotokan, the style JKS teaches, is known for deep, strong stances and long, powerful techniques. Beginners usually start with stances, blocks and basic strikes before any partner work or sparring, and classes are normally grouped by age first, then by level. Beyond the physical side, parents often choose karate for focus, confidence, respect and basic self-defence skills, and many children start from around four or five.

Who it's for

Children aged 4 and above for karate, starting in age-grouped sessions and later grouped by skill level rather than age. Self-defence classes are offered for various ages and levels; ages for kickboxing and gymnastics are not published - ask the provider.
