Trial class

Gracie Barra JBR is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy at Al Fattan Marine Towers in Dubai Marina, part of the Gracie Barra network founded by Master Carlos Gracie Jr. Its Kids & Teens Program takes children aged 2 to 15, with structured classes for both beginners and more advanced students. The academy says the programme helps children build discipline, confidence and coordination, and that classes are led by qualified instructors using a safe, progressive method, with personalised feedback that respects each student's pace. The timetable on its website shows kids' classes in three groups (LC1, LC2 and Juniors & Teens) on weekday afternoons from 5PM and on Saturday mornings, with no classes listed on Sunday. Alongside the kids' classes it runs adults' classes for men and women (gi and no-gi) and one-on-one private lessons, so a parent could train in the same building. Fees are not listed online. A trial class is booked through a short online form, after which the team sends a WhatsApp message to arrange the visit. On Google the academy is rated 5.0 from 10 reviews.

The activity

Jiu-Jitsu, explained

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches children to control a partner with grips, leverage and ground positions rather than punches or kicks. Beginners learn basic positions, escapes and simple techniques, and progress through a structured belt system as their skills grow. Along the way it builds coordination, body awareness, discipline and confidence, and gives kids a practical grounding in self-defence. Classes are instructor-led and usually open with a warm-up before technique practice. Starting ages vary by academy: some take toddlers, others begin at school age, so check the age bands of the programme you are looking at before booking.

Who it's for

Children and teenagers aged 2-15 on the Kids & Teens Program, with structured classes for beginners and more advanced students; the timetable splits kids into LC1, LC2 and Juniors & Teens groups, but the website does not say which ages each group covers, so ask the provider which group suits your child. The academy says Jiu-Jitsu suits beginners of all ages and fitness levels. Adults' classes for men and women and private lessons also run here. For support for children with additional needs, ask the provider.

What to expect

According to the academy, a first class starts with a warm-up followed by instruction on basic techniques and positions, and no prior fitness is needed. To book a trial, fill in the form on the website and choose the class type; the team then contacts you and sends a WhatsApp message to book your visit. The website does not say what to wear, how long a class lasts or whether the trial is free, so ask the provider when they message you.
