The activity

Ballet, explained

Ballet teaches posture, balance, coordination and musicality through set positions and movement sequences, usually starting with basic steps at the barre and building up to short routines in the centre of the studio. Children develop strength, flexibility and focus gradually, with classes grouped by age and ability so technique builds safely over time. It suits kids who enjoy structure, music and performing, and many schools hold shows so students can perform what they have learned. The youngest classes are usually playful pre-ballet sessions that introduce rhythm, movement and simple steps before formal technique begins.

Who it's for

Children from 3 years old. Pre-Ballet is for ages 3-5, Gymnastics Basics for ages 4-13, Fine Arts for ages 5-13, and Ballet Competitive runs from age 6 to adults for students taking three or more ballet classes a week. Recreational ballet students take two classes a week, and there are adult ballet classes for beginners and advanced dancers. Ask the provider about additional needs.

What to expect

Classes are grouped by age, and recreational ballet students are expected to attend two classes a week; the competitive course asks for three or more. Pre-Ballet is described as building discipline, teamwork and physical ability as a first step towards proper ballet classes. Students take part in annual performances. The website has a registration form, but it does not publish a trial class, uniform or kit list, so ask the provider about booking a first lesson and what to wear.
