The activity

Dance, explained

Ballroom dancing for kids comes in two families. Standard (or Ballroom) covers the smooth, travelling dances such as Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Quickstep; Latin covers the quicker, rhythmic ones such as Cha-Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba and Jive. Children learn steps, timing to the music, posture and how to dance with a partner, and many go on to perform at showcases or compete as a couple or solo. It builds coordination, balance, rhythm and the confidence to be seen on a dance floor. Complete beginners are welcome, and children usually start with the basic figures of each dance before moving up through graded levels.

Who it's for

Children joining the studio's kids dance group class, from complete beginners upwards: the studio says it works with all levels from beginners to competitive dancers, and children start in category E, the entry level of the international dance rating system. The site doesn't publish an age range for the kids class - ask the provider.

What to expect

Book a kids trial class (AED 49) on the fees page, or message the studio on WhatsApp; its FAQ says the administrators then contact you to schedule your child's first lesson, and you can choose any style for them to try. The studio's kids article says new children can also start with an introductory private lesson, where a dance choreographer draws up a plan for the child's development. Dancers must wear dance shoes or soft-soled (suede or leather) shoes to be admitted to class. Group sessions that don't reach three participants may be cancelled or rescheduled. Kids class times aren't shown on the published group timetable - ask the provider.
