About Emerging Stars
Emerging Stars is a learning centre in Barsha Business Square in Al Barsha, open since 2019. It mixes tech classes with learning support, so one centre can cover several of a child's after-school needs. On the tech side there is robotics with ROBOROBO and LEGO Education kits (Robo Junior for ages 4 to 7, Robotics & Coding for 8+), Python from age 10, C++ from 13, Arduino electronics from 10 and 3D printing from 8. The centre also coaches teams for competitions such as the FIRST LEGO League. Beyond STEM it runs Master Mind Abacus mental maths, SOI cognitive skills training, an ES reading and writing programme with phonics and handwriting, English, maths and science foundation courses, a school support programme up to grade 6 and dyslexia learning support. Fees and timetables are not published, so message the centre for current prices and class times.
The activity
Coding, explained
Kids' coding and robotics classes turn screen time into making time. Younger children usually start with chunky building blocks and picture cards that tell a small robot what to do, so they learn sequencing and cause and effect before they ever type a line of code. Older children move on to real programming languages such as Python, wire up simple electronics and program robots to complete set tasks, often in teams. Along the way they practise logic, patience, problem-solving and working with others. Many centres let children start at around six or seven, with text-based coding usually from about ten.
Who it's for
The centre says its programmes are built for ages 5 to 16. Course pages give their own bands: Robo Junior 4 to 7, Robotics & Coding 8+, 3D printing 8+, Python 10+, Arduino 10+ and C++ 13+. School support is for children up to grade 6, and there is dyslexia learning support for children who need help with reading. Robotics & Coding runs at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The site's starting ages vary between pages, so confirm the youngest age with the centre.
What to expect
In Robo Junior, younger children build a robot from blocks, complete its circuit and then program it with picture cards (110 of them), which builds logic and early maths. Older children in Robotics & Coding work at their own level, from beginner to advanced. Python and C++ are each taught in four levels of ten 90-minute sessions; level 1 Python covers syntax, variables, lists, if statements and loops. Abacus classes use the Master Mind Abacus books and speed software, and the Master Mind programme states a 1:10 teacher-to-student ratio. Trial classes, kit and fees are not published, so ask the provider.
