About Brainy n Bright Training

Brainy n Bright is a technology school for children, teaching coding, robotics and other STEM subjects. In the UAE it has two centres in Dubai, in the Platinum Business Center in Al Nahda 2 and the B8 Building in Al Barsha 1, plus a centre on Hamdan Street in Abu Dhabi, and it also teaches live online. Its UAE page says classes are for children aged 6 to 16; the course pages list Scratch Junior and Young Coder from 5, LEGO Robotics from 6 and Python from 7, with game and app development, 3D design, drones and AI further along. Courses such as Young Coder, Python and LEGO Robotics are taught in groups of 2 to 5 children, and some courses can also be taken one to one online. Children get a certificate on completion. The school also prepares teams for robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League, World Robot Olympiad and VEX. A free first class is available online or at any of the three UAE centres.

The activity

Coding, explained

Coding for kids is learning to give a computer step-by-step instructions, and seeing them work straight away. Young children usually start with block-based tools such as Scratch Junior and Scratch, snapping commands together to make a character move, tell a story or run a simple game. Along the way they meet the big ideas of programming: sequences, loops, conditions and functions. Older children move on to typed languages such as Python, and often link code to robots, apps or games. Beyond the code itself, it builds patience, logical thinking and the habit of testing and fixing mistakes. Many programmes take children from about five, with typed languages usually starting a little later.

Who it's for

Children aged 6 to 16, according to the UAE free-class page; individual course pages give 5 and above for Scratch Junior and Young Coder, 6 and above for LEGO Robotics and 7 and above for Python, so ask which course suits a five-year-old. Beginners are welcome, as are children aiming for robotics competitions. Children need a tablet or laptop.

What to expect

The first step is a free class, online or at the Al Nahda, Al Barsha or Abu Dhabi centre, and a parent needs to be available during it. After an enquiry, a programme manager talks through the child's interests and suggests a course. Courses are instructor-led, with mini projects, capstone projects and assessment milestones along the way; Young Coder, Python and LEGO Robotics run in groups of 2 to 5, and some courses are also offered one to one online. Young Coder, for example, runs 20 to 80 classes and covers conditions, loops and functions while children build games and apps. Bring a tablet or laptop. Fee amounts and class times are not published: ask the provider.
