About Coding School

Coding School is a UAE coding and technology school for children aged 6 to 16, and a division of Airtics Education. Its core offer is personalised one-to-one live lessons taught online, and the school also mentions onsite programmes. There are four programme tracks. Champ Coder is a first programming course built around ScratchJr, Tynker, Google Sheets and Google Sites. Robo Whiz is a robotics track in three levels, running from basic electronics and LEGO engineering up to Raspberry Pi, Python and drones. Gaming Honcho teaches game design from Scratch3 and Construct through C# to Unity3D, in levels for ages 8 to 16. Metaverse Maestro, the AI track, moves from Scratch3 and Pictoblox projects such as chatbots and image recognition to machine learning with Python. The school says it is accredited by STEM.org, and it also runs workshops and robotics labs for schools. You can book a free demo class before committing. On Google the school is listed at an office in Illya Tower, Al Qusais; ask where any in-person sessions run.

The activity

Coding, explained

Coding for children starts with play. The youngest learners snap together picture blocks in apps such as ScratchJr to make characters move, then graduate to Scratch, where they build their own games and animations. Older children move on to typed languages such as Python and C#, game engines such as Unity, and robotics kits where the code makes lights, motors and sensors respond. Along the way they practise breaking a big problem into small steps, spotting and fixing mistakes, and sticking with a project until it works. Many children start with block-based coding at around six or seven, once they are comfortable reading short instructions, and move to text-based languages in their later primary or early secondary years.

Who it's for

Children aged 6 to 16. Gaming Honcho and Metaverse Maestro (AI) each run three levels: Base for ages 8 to 10, Intermediate for 11 to 13 and Advanced for 14 to 16. Robo Whiz and Champ Coder levels have no published age, so ask which suits your child; younger beginners usually start with Champ Coder, which uses ScratchJr and Tynker.

What to expect

Start with the free demo class, which you book through the website's contact form or by calling the school. The one-to-one lessons are live and online, so your child needs a computer and an internet connection; the school also mentions onsite programmes, so ask where in-person sessions run. Courses are built from modules: Champ Coder, for example, is four modules of four hours each (16 hours in all), and each Gaming Honcho level is also 16 hours. Robo Whiz levels run for 24 sessions. Whether lessons are recorded, whether a robotics kit is needed at home, and how often classes run each week are not published: ask the provider.
