About Innov8 Tech Education Services
Innov8 Tech Education Services is a community makerspace in Town Square, run from Shop 1, Rawda Apartments 2. Its robotics classes use three kits: mBot for beginners with drag-and-drop coding, LEGO Education (WeDo and Mindstorms), and VEX for students training for robotics competitions. Next to robotics there are coding courses (Scratch, Python, web development, Java and C++) and an Electronics & Innovation Lab for ages 8 to 18 using Micro:bit, Arduino and Raspberry Pi. There are also English (phonics, speed reading, creative writing) and maths (mental maths, abacus, Fun With Numbers) programmes. The centre also runs scent-making, arts and woodworking workshops, after-school and weekend sessions, holiday camps and birthday parties. The CEO, Farida Dhambolawala, writes that she has nearly two decades in education and is a British Schools Overseas (BSO) accredited inspector. Kits and tools are provided in robotics and electronics classes, and robotics students get a course completion certificate. Fees depend on the programme, so ask the centre for a quote.
The activity
Robotics, explained
Kids' robotics mixes building, electronics and coding. Children put together a robot from a kit, wire up motors and sensors, then write a program that tells it what to do, such as follow a line, avoid a wall or pick something up. Younger children usually start with snap-together kits and drag-and-drop blocks on a screen. Older ones move to text code and more advanced kits, and some go on to build for robotics competitions. Along the way they practise problem-solving, patience when something doesn't work first time, and teamwork. Most children start with block-based robotics in the early primary years, but starting ages differ from centre to centre, so check with the provider.
Who it's for
Children and teens. The Electronics & Innovation Lab is for ages 8 to 18, with students grouped by age and experience. Robotics runs from beginner kits (mBot, LEGO WeDo) up to VEX for students preparing for competitions. The English courses are open to children of all ages, beginners included. Ages for robotics, coding and maths are not published, so ask the provider. The centre also runs workshops for adults, school field trips and teacher training, but those are separate from the kids' classes.
What to expect
Classes are hands-on. In robotics, children build and program robots and learn about sensors, movement and logic. In the electronics lab they build working projects rather than study theory. For robotics and the electronics lab, the centre provides all kits, tools and components. For computer-based classes such as coding, the centre's terms ask children to bring their own fully charged device. Workshop sessions are usually 1-2 hours, with camps running full days. Classes are sold as packages valid for 6 months; cancel at least 24 hours ahead or the session is charged, and payments are non-refundable. Group size, class times and trials: ask the provider.
