About CognoSkillz
CognoSkillz is a small brain training centre on 7th Street in The Springs. It runs one-to-one cognitive training programmes licensed by BrainRx: a trainer works through game-like mental workouts with your child to strengthen the skills behind learning, such as attention, memory, processing speed and sound skills for reading. The centre is clear that this is not tutoring. It doesn't teach school content; it works on how the brain takes in and uses information. Everything starts with a Cognitive Skills Assessment of about an hour, followed by a free consultation to go through the results and agree a plan. The centre works with children who find focus, reading, maths or homework hard, including those with ADHD or dyslexia, and runs a School Readiness programme for ages 4.5 to 7. It also takes high school and university students, gifted learners and adults. Centre Director Sunita Sharma is a Board Certified Cognitive Specialist (BCCS) with IBCCES. Prices aren't published, so ask when you enquire.
The activity
Learning Support, explained
Cognitive skills training, often called brain training, works on the skills underneath learning rather than on school subjects. Instead of re-teaching maths or spelling, a trainer sits one-to-one with a child and runs quick, game-like drills with cards, sounds, patterns and timed tasks that work on attention, memory, processing speed and auditory and visual processing. Sessions are fast-paced and get harder as the child improves, a bit like a personal trainer for the brain. Programmes usually start with an assessment so the plan targets a child's weaker skills. It suits children who struggle with focus, reading or homework, and some centres run early programmes from around school-starting age.
Who it's for
Children and teens who struggle with attention and ADHD, reading and dyslexia, maths, homework, memory, organisation or test anxiety; a School Readiness programme for ages 4.5 to 7; also high school and university students, gifted learners and adults. All training is one-to-one.
What to expect
The first step is a Cognitive Skills Assessment. The centre describes it as a set of interactive brain games rather than a test, and suggests telling your child that's what it is. It takes about an hour (the FAQ says around one hour and fifteen minutes). Soon afterwards you get a free consultation where the team explains your child's cognitive strengths and weaker skills and suggests the most suitable next step. If you go ahead, training is one-to-one with a trainer, using game-like mental workouts planned around the assessment results. The centre retests before and after training to measure progress. Whether the assessment itself is charged, session length and programme fees: ask the provider.
