About Basicball Academy Dubai
Basicball Academy is a basketball school in Dubai that trains children and teenagers at three school venues: Dubai International Academy Al Barsha, Raffles International School in Umm Suqeim and English College Dubai in Al Safa. Its programmes are split by age: 4-6 years, 7-10 years, 11-14 years and 15+ advance, plus a strength and conditioning programme. For the youngest groups the academy says the goal is to learn basic movement skills through basketball "in a positive fun way", not to win. Older groups move on to shooting technique, team tactics and game play at speed. Children in the 4-6, 7-10 and 15+ groups take speed tests, and each player gets an individual profile to track progress. The academy describes its Basketball School as ten months of basketball from September to June, with two or three sessions a week. Classes are mainly in English, with Arabic as a supplement. Fees and session times are not on the website, so message the academy to confirm which venue is running this season.
The activity
Basketball, explained
Basketball for children starts with movement: running, stopping, jumping and changing direction, then handling the ball. Young players learn to dribble with either hand, pass and catch on the move, and shoot with good form, usually through small games rather than drills alone. As they get older they add team ideas such as spacing, fast breaks and defending together. It builds coordination, speed, fitness and confidence, and because it is a team game it also teaches listening, sharing the ball and handling a loss. Many clubs take children from about four or five, often with a lower hoop and a smaller ball at first.
Who it's for
Children from 4 upwards. The programme pages list four age groups: 4-6 years, 7-10 years, 11-14 years and 15+ advance. The academy also runs teams for teenagers and adults (an U16 boys squad and Men's and Mixed league teams were announced in 2025). Ask the provider about girls' groups and support for special needs.
What to expect
For the 4-6 and 7-10 groups, the programme pages describe fun-first sessions. The 4-6 group works on coordination, agility, running, jumping and stopping; the 7-10 group adds technique, endurance, flexibility and teamwork. Both cover basics such as the ready position, stationary dribbling, passing and catching, lay-ups and simple 1-on-1 games. Players take speed tests (5, 10 and 20 metres) and get an individual progress profile. Payment in full is required before a child attends, and the registration fee is not refundable. Missed sessions are not made up, bar one catch-up session. What to wear, session length and whether a free trial is running now are not published, so ask the provider.
