The activity
Gymnastics, explained
Gymnastics builds strength, balance, flexibility and coordination through structured movement on mats, bars and beams. Clubs usually start children with tumbling basics - rolls, jumps and balances - before moving on to apparatus skills. The youngest groups at many clubs are parent-and-child sessions focused on crawling, climbing and following simple instructions, while school-age children work on cartwheels, handstands and short routines. It is a good foundation sport: the body awareness it builds carries over into most other sports a child tries later. Starting ages vary from club to club, so check with the provider.
